Aliyar Dam is located at a distance of 24 kilometers from Pollachi, Coimbatore District TN. The dam was constructed during the years 1959-1969 across the Aliyar River as a part of the Parampikulam Project. The main purpose of the dam is irrigation. The dam has a height of 81 m from the deepest foundation. It is an ideal picnic spot.
HOW TO REACH Aliyar is easily Accessible from Coimbatore (TN) and Palakkad (Kerala). Coimbatore : Get a Bus which goes to Pollachi or Palany from Ukadam Bus Stand, There are Bues Every 10 Minutes. The Bus charge is 12 Rs and it takes around 45 minutes to reach Pollachi. If you are moving by a Palany bus, enquire the conductor whether the bus goes via Pollachi. From Pollachi there are town buses to Aliyar (Takes 1.5 hour and Charge is 10 Rs). The long trip buses which goes to Valparai will move along Aliyar, but please enquire the conductor, whether it will stop at Aliyar.
Palakkad : You can reach Pollachi from Palakkad vi Chittur (Bus Charge is 21 Rs and Takes 1.5 Hours). From pollachi you can follow the route specified above.
Sights At Aliyar: Aliyar is a lesser known tourist spot, no doubt many film directors were interested in making their films at Aliyar. (Including the Malayalam film Hitler).
You have a splendid view of the majestic Animalay hills of western ghats from Aliyar, A walk along the dam is relaxing. There is park and garden near the Aliyar dam for kids to spend a whole day.
The famous waterfalls monkey falls is just 2 kms away from Aliyar dam along the Valparai route . There is a viewpoint 4 kilometers further along the Valparai route , from where you can have a birds eye view of the Aliyar dam and the decan plateau. If you are interested in trekking, you have a lot of hills here.
