It is a very beautiful place just five Kilometer away from Peermade and ten Kilometer away from Vandiperiyar. It looks like a vast stretch of rook spotted with lush green grass. The word parunth in the local language means Eagle and para means rock.It is called Parunthumpara or eagle rock because we can see a large area around like an eagle could see from height.
I had a panoramic view of High peaks and trenches.I was able to see the Trishanku hills of Kuttikanam and the Pattumala church from here.It was like a 360 degree view of the whole High-range.I was amazed to see the deep trenches surrounding the Parunthumpara. You can stand on the peak and view the trench just below you.Down the valley there are deep forests which have tribal settlements and a dozen of waterfalls.
There was a small temple located on the rock.During the first visit to this place I saw an eagle sitting on one of the small peaks of Parunthumpara...may be to make me understand that the place is Parunthumpara. It is said that it is possible to see the divine light the "Makaravilaku of the Savirimala from here. Thousands of people arrive here to see this spectacular event.
It is a trekkers paradise. If you are experts come with ropes and sliders to trek along the trenches to reach the forests below.I f you move further more about three kilometers you will reach the place called mount where there are more deep trenches. If you go further you can reach Savirimala the famous pilgrim center. Even if you miss other attractions at Kuttikanam you should not miss this. The road to Parunthumpare is flanked by unending stretches of tea cardamom and coffee.
